Chardonnay Day: Burgundy celebrated on the Web 2.0

It has become fashionable to dedicate one day a year to a particular grape variety. After ‘Gamay Day’ a few weeks ago, ‘Chardonnay day’ was celebrated on May 26, not only in Burgundy but also via social media worldwide. The event, which began in the United States in 2010, mainly revolves around social media and traditionally takes place the Thursday before Memorial Day. Internet users from around the world, both wine lovers and drinkers of the varietal, are invited to share their interest and impressions over a glass of Chardonnay, using the hashtag #chardonnayday.

But the varietal was also part of a ‘real’ meeting in Burgundy, in its ‘native’ village of Chardonnay to be specific. The eighteen producers of Mâcon-Chardonnay, led by the co-operative winery of Lugny, along with the Chardonnay village council and local tourist information offices, held a typically Burgundian celebration in the village square on May 26. The event included a concert and tastings of wines from the Mâcon area.

Chardonnay is the second most widely planted grape variety in the world with a total 200,000 hectares under vine producing approximately 10 million hectolitres of wine. Less than 0.1% of this amount comes from the Mâcon-Chardonnay appellation area.
