All of April and part of May were like winter”, says Carole Dumont, vineyard consultant for Simonit & Sirch in Burgundy and Provence. The sun is now back, temperatures are rising and the vines could wake up within a week, she explains.

In Burgundy, Dumont has seen all manner of things. “I thought it was going to be a disaster in Burgundy, but ultimately it's not”. When temperatures plummeted to below -5°C, however, even the buds that had yet to emerge froze. “I saw black secondary buds three weeks ago, and they won't grow again”, laments Dumont. She doesn’t want to give any false hope. “Some Guyot-trained canes will not produce anything. There will simply be renewed growth on the shoots and the old wood” Dumont has also noticed some spiralling, with flower buds turning into tendrils. “It's not going to be a big harvest, but we need to wait a few more days and then work on shoot thinning and green harvesting to allow for 3 or 4 bunches per vine and prepare for the year's pruning”.

If you green harvest you wont have a harvest at all .!
