Simplification: Bordeaux's wine civilisation centre becomes 'Cité du Vin'
l

We have decided to simplify the centre for wine civilisation’s name to Cité du Vin”, announced Bordeaux’s mayor Alain Juppé recently during a breakfast with Bordeaux wine growers at the Bordeaux Fête le Vin festival in Quebec. The announcement confirms previous revelations by regional newspaper Sud Ouest at the start of the summer. Approved by the centre’s board, the decision comes in the wake of research findings by a consultancy firm which showed that a shorter, more inviting and easily recognisable name would be beneficial.

The aluminium cladding sheets are currently being fixed to the wine centre which is due to be completed next March and officially opened in June 2016. The project has been supported by Bordeaux city council since 1995. The centre’s name change in no way undermines its original objectives, which are to promote universal wine growing heritage. The intention is “to reach a breakeven point of between 300,000 and 350,000 visitors a year. The city of Bordeaux attracts 6 million tourists so it is not unreasonable to hope that 5% of them will go to the centre”, believes Alain Juppé.
