Burgundy - decrease in volume of sales and increase in prices
l

‘’We estimate that volume of sales decreased by 4-5% in the first quarter of 2008, and that prices increased by around the same percentage. We were expecting this decrease after two years of strong growth and actually have a very low stock here in Burgundy’’, said a very lucid but calm Fréderic Dupray, Head of Economic Studies at the ‘Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne’ (BIVB). However, there is not really anything to worry about for the BIVB if sales slow down after two years of high prices in a context where demand far outweighs production, the basic principles still remain intact.
In an email to its clients, the Albert Bichot company identified three main reasons for the drop in sales after two years of remarkable growth; the strong Euro, the rise in prices of the 2007 harvest and the economic gloom that is currently affecting clients.

The Euro has gained 16% on the Dollar over the last 10 months. Fréderic Dupray explained that sales to the USA have suffered due to the strong Euro, while sales to the UK have suffered because of the decline of the Pound and a less than brilliant economic situation.
